On January 19, Equatorial Guinea inaugurated its first forum on sports, which was held at the Ngolo Palace in Bata. The conference, “State of Sports in Equatorial Guinea,” was sponsored by the Minister of youth and Sports, Francisco Pascual Obama Asue, and was held to promote the development of national sports and find solutions to current issues.
Top discussions at the forum focused on funding, maintenance of existing infrastructures in the country, the lack of training camps for clubs and recommendation of recognizing some of the country’s top former athletes.
During the opening ceremony, the Prime Minister represented President Obiang Nguema Mbasogo in receiving the Great Sportsman Award in Equatorial Guinea. Afterward, the Prime Minister emphasized the importance of incorporating sports in youth education and the need for improved sports facilities and resources across the country.
Also discussed at the conference was administration, legislation, human resource development, financing and media in reference to national sports programs. During the conclusion of the forum, leaders requested the creation of a fund for the development of sports and a campaign that would encourage sports practice for the population.
