Ghana Football Association spokesman Randy Abbey has revealed that Ghana team doctors will be sent to London to further assess Essien’s condition before a decision is made regarding further action. Essien, 28, has been ruled out of action for six months after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament in training at Chelsea FC. He is expected to miss out of the 28th edition of the continental championship which starts next January in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea. Ghana is still yet to qualify however they are clear favorites to go through to the finals. The Ghana Football Association says it will wait till the last minute to make a decision on Michael Essien concerning the 2012 Africa Cup Nations Cup finals. The West London club have also insisted Essien will not be rushed back into action which means the enforcer is not likely to represent Ghana at the Nations Cup.
Essien has recently returned from a 16-month break from international duty.
Equatorial Guinea and Gabon will be hosting the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations which will be the 28th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations. The two countries defeated bids from two previous winners, Angola and Libya as well as a Nigerian bid. As Equatorial Guinea and Gabon are the hosts, they will automatically be qualified to the tournament. They join Botswana and Côte d’Ivoire who have also already qualified as winners of their respective groups. The opening match, one semi-final and the third place match will be held in Equatorial Guinea while the other semi-final and the final will be held in Gabon. The two stadiums that will be used in Equatorial Guinea are Estadio de Bata and the Nuevo Estadio de Malabo. The draw for the finals will take place on the 29th October, 2011.
